Welcome to summer!

Our summer season runs from September to March and focuses on the skills required for track and field athletics. We provide training and competition opportunities in three different categories:    Mini athletics   (3-4 year olds), Little athletics (5-16 year olds), and Senior athletics (11 years +).

All our programs focus on teaching athletes the fundamental skills of running, jumping & throwing. We provide weekly competitions within the centre every Saturday from October to March. We also encourage attendance at external events including inter-centre friendlies and State Championships.

Smith-Bossert Challenge:

A friendly competition between Joondalup and Ridgewood Little Athletics Centres. Athletes achieve points based on their performance. The centre with the most points at the end of the day's competition win the coveted Smith-Bossert Shield. Each age group competes in a sprint, a distance race, a jump and a throw.

Multi-day:

A medal competition at HBF Arena, Joondalup for JAC athletes only. It is run on the principle of heptathlon/decathlon. Athletes compete in 4 events (sprint, distance, a jump, a throw). Athletes achieve points based on how far away they are from the JAC centre record for that event. Final positions are determined by total overall points.

Centre Champs:

A competition for JAC athletes only.  Athletes nominate for a limited number of events to compete in. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd placed athletes for each event.

Chase & fun events:

Joondalup Chase: Athletes compete against each other in a handicapped 110m race and 600m race. Depending on the athletes' PB, they may start further forward and therefore not have to run the full distance. If every athlete were to run their PB on the day of the race, they should (theoretically) cross the finish line at the same time. Cash prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd placed athletes.

Fun events: Athletes have the opportunity to compete in modified athletic events such as a standing long jump or baseball throw. There is also an obstacle course that is always a hit with all age groups. Track events at modified distances allow for athletes to compete to new centre records in those distances.

Combined events:

A State Championship event for U11+ athletes. Athletes compete in a pentathlon, heptathlon or decathlon (depending on age and gender).  Final places are determined by total points accumulated across all events.

State Relays:

A State Championship event for U9+ athletes. There is the option of a track relay or a field relay. Athletics west do not allow an athlete to compete in both track and field relays. This is due to issues caused with clashes of track and field events.

Athletes are selected by members of the Joondalup Athletics Board based on individual performance in the event. Track teams consist of a  4x100m, 4x200m or 4x400m teams. In 2023 the Swedish relay was substituted into the program which proved very popular. Athletes may be selected for one or both track teams. Field teams consist of between 2 & 4 athletes competing in 4 separate field events. Points are achieved for each event. Final places are determined by the combined total points achieved by the team.

Zones:

This is a pre-state event for U9-U15 athletes and a State Championship event for U7-U8's. Athletes compete against members of 8 other Perth-based centres (north/east of the river). This event is usually hosted by one of the competing clubs within the zone and is run across 2 days (Sat & Sun). Athletes are limited by the number of events they are able to compete in (depending on age).

State Champs:

A State Championship event for U9+. Athletes must achieve the qualifying standard for each event to be eligible to compete. Athletes must self-nominate prior to the closing date, for the events they wish to compete in. This event is held across 2 days (Sat & Sun) at WA Athletics Stadium.

STRIVE:

This is a weekly competition for senior athletes usually held at WA Athletics Stadium.
